ASHTON IRWIN
The Belasco Theatre, Los Angeles - 18th July 2024
The 18th of July 2024 marked the beginning of a new era for Ashton Irwin. Under the moody lighting of the beautifully ornate Belasco Theatre, he bounded onto stage to perform solo for the first time ever.

Normally a beast behind the kit at your favourite 5 Seconds of Summer shows, an evening in LA offered Ashton a rare opportunity to step out from behind the drums and take centre stage. To celebrate the release of his sophomore record, ‘Blood on the Drums’, with an intimate, one-night-only performance.
The show opened with the album’s lead single, ‘Straight To Your Heart’, setting the tone for the evening with electric and infectious energy. There was absolutely no sign of first-show nerves as he transitioned between his new role as frontman, and the more familiar territory of playing the gorgeous drum kit embellished with the ‘Ai’ symbol, set up stage right.

The night’s setlist took us on an adventure through almost the entirety of his new work, with a few ’Superbloom’ surprises sprinkled in for good measure. A nod to the music that started his solo journey all the way back in 2020. Most of the performance consisted of high-energy, anthemic tracks from his new album, with some personal highlights including the title track, ‘Rebel At Heart’, and ‘Glory Days’.

There are so many important themes within his music, presenting some particularly delicate moments through the show. ’California Holds Her Breath’ to name but one, which captures so eloquently the feeling of waiting on bated breath to know someone’s fate, while simultaneously knowing it’s completely out of your hands.
During the quieter moments gratitude radiated from Ashton with every crowd interaction, creating such a genuine and present atmosphere. Something he conveys at every show, only magnified by being front and centre on this occasion.

The signature of Ashton as an artist is the meticulous intent behind every aspect of his music and performances. From custom guitar picks designed specifically for the night, painted (‘bloodied’) drumsticks thrown out into the crowd, or personally signed posters. The thought behind every single detail of this show and work in general is what cultivates such a genuine connection between him and the fans, evident in the distance so many had travelled to be there for such a special moment.
The evening concluded with ‘Have U Found What Ur Looking For?’, a finale that brought the journey full circle. From hearing Superbloom in the depths of 2020 to flying from the UK to hear my new favourite album live, this night was pure energy and fulfilment. One which will live on in the hearts of myself and so many others.

When and where Ashton will return as a solo artist remains a mystery, but if the opportunity arises, I can only hope I get to witness his magic again.

Much love, Grace xx
